Several companies that certify vessels are seaworthy and ship insurers have withdrawn services to tankers involved in the Venezuelan oil trade as the United States targets the maritime industry to tighten sanctions on the Latin American country.

Washington has honed in on the maritime industry in recent months in efforts to better enforce sanctions on the oil trade and isolate Caracas, Washington’s special envoy on Venezuela Elliott Abrams told Reuters. Without certification, a vessel and its cargo become uninsured. Ship owners would also be in breach of commercial contracts which require certificates to be maintained. In addition, port authorities can refuse entry or detain a ship.

Another leading ship classifier, Hamburg-headquartered DNV GL Maritime, said it had suspended services for three of those vessels in June. Insurers are also in a bind. They have been conservative in their interpretation of U.S. sanctions to avoid any potential violations, said Mike Salthouse, chairman of the sanctions sub-committee with the International Group association. The group represents companies that insure about 90% of the world’s commercial shipping.

The US global bully and its illegal economic embargoes, dictating, coercing, threatening the world while our so-called 'free press' of our so-called 'rules-based world order' does their propaganda without ever mentioning how illegal are their actions, consequences on tens of M.

Because it's not enough that Trump destroys the US.

Venezuelan oil trade? You mean Maduro's oil trade? Still don't understand why hrw does nothing to prosecute Maduro for crimes against humanity?!

mattspetalnick America starves Venezuelans for having an authoritarian president, then supports Narco-dictator JuanOrlandoH's reign of terror in Honduras. The US govt never cared about human rights in Latin America, decades of genocidal dictatorships supported by the CIA should prove that.

mattspetalnick The same age old Western rhetoric. Bend to our will or we will shove down democracy down your throat.

mattspetalnick Who wrote this, Maduro himself?

mattspetalnick Good!

mattspetalnick Terrorists.

Goddamn it sure is wild how all the countries that hate freedom the most are the ones sitting on oil reserves. I'm sure that's just a coincidence tho

God turns Covid screws on FL, TX and AZ infecting more & ultimately killing more in those states where Trump gets strong voter support. Is it God or more correctly Trump & his GOP governors? Meanwhile Trump kills more Venezuelans by denying food fuel & everything! Trump Satan?

That will show them. No one messes with the family. Come on boys....

Rogue nation US strikes again. After repeated failed coups, they tighten the blockade (during a pandemic) that only hurts the innocent people they purportedly 'support.' And, Biden will continue the policy of regime change, brutal sanctions, and refusal to engage in dialogue.

Spending billions to cause starvation - USA

This is wrong! Stop suffocating Venezuela
