Power once wielded exclusively by landlords has been passed to their would-be tenants, giving renters the chance to negotiate lower prices – and bigger perks

Nam and their partner, for instance, asked that the unit be painted before they moved in. And they were able to choose a place with a hands-on landlord with long-term tenants.

“You’re hearing this kind of across the board. A lot of people are moving into units that are semi-furnished and looked like they were ready to go as an AirBnB,” Dent said. “The other area where I think you might see some increasing supplies from student housing.” Sara Rowshanbin, a broker who represents buyers, sellers, landlords and tenants, said her business has seen a dramatic shift during the pandemic, with fewer people looking to rent.

Not to all tenants..

'Power' handed to those tenants who can afford to play the rental market because they're either still employed, or have resources (parents, partner, investment income, etc.). For lower income households, there's no evidence that rental choices have increased.

Ohh how convenient, so now renters WANT markets rates...that’s off I thought rent control was the only fair way

And the evidence of this claim?

No actual human person I know has had this experience. I moved myself last month, and not one landlord I met acted as if the power had been shifted back into the hands of renters. Bachelors in Toronto are still $1350. One bedrooms $1600+
