Malaysia’s urban poor prefer microloans for business to cash handouts post-MCO, new Unicef-UNFPA study shows

Public policy and research institute DM Analytics’ managing director Muhammed Abdul Khalid, whose organisation conducted the study in partnership with Unicef and UNFPA, said the most common form of preferred sustainable assistance is micro-loans. “Essentially they want the ability to generate income, rather than handouts to reduce their costs,” he said.

A handful of households face issues due to illiteracy, procedural issues, do not qualify due to the registration of their business with the Commission of Companies, logistical issues, among others. “Compounded by the problems Malaysia faces including nutrition and stunted growth among some of its children, the MCO’s effects will exacerbate the situation if the proper steps are not taken,” he said at the launch.
