Ten years ago, I touched down on African soil for the first time. I traveled to Sierra Leone to see how maternal health and women’s economic empowerment programs were shaping communities after the civil war. Landing in Freetown, the nation’s capital, was an out of body experience. As the plane descended I distinctly remember rocking back and forth in my seat and keeping my eyes glued to the window, tears rolling down my face.

In the years that followed, I criss-crossed the continent tapping into worlds of art, design, food, music, and vibes that no travel company or publication had ever let me know existed. I launched , which has now brought together nearly 8,000 people representing 51-plus countries in a four-month stretch, we’ve gone beyond helping people discover things to do on a trip in Africa and dived deeper intoTravel opens up an experience and discourse that allows Black people to understand and define our position in the world. This becomes a lifeline when living within systems that are tainted by white supremacy, not designed for this level of self-discovery and actualization for our community.
