Coronavirus vaccine czar said Moderna will seek an emergency use authorization for its vaccine by the end of November

Moderna will seek emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration for its COVID-19 vaccine by the end of the month, the coronavirus vaccine czar said Sunday.Moderna, the biotech company that last week announced the results of its COVID-19 vaccine, will apply with the Food and Drug Administration for an emergency use authorization by the end of the month, Moncef Slaoui, the head of the White House Operation "Warp Speed" said Sunday.

Pfizer, which also last week said it had successfully developed a vaccine to prevent COVID-19 transmission, sought emergency use authorization on Friday. A panel of outside experts is scheduled to meet on December 10 to discuss the Pfizer vaccine, and Slaoui said a panel would convene on December 17 to discuss the Moderna vaccine in what he called a "parallel" process.

Slaoui, a former executive at GlaxoSmithKline and Moderna board member, said also Sunday that the Pfizer vaccine could be distributed to some people in the USif it received an authorization on the same day the panel convenes to discuss it.
