Louise Elliot has three houses, one of which is listed on Airbnb for $800 a night in high season. Her city is considering putting a cap on Airbnbs but Ms Elliot believes owners should get to decide on what to do with their investment houses.

Louise Elliot and her husband have three houses — one of which is listed on short-stay accommodation site Airbnb. And despite going for around $800 a night in high season, it has a "high occupancy rate".

"I'm also not going to sugar-coat it. This is one of those properties where it used to be tenanted and it could be again — but this is a property that we own, so we should be able to make the decisions on how it's used," she said."That's where the Government needs to step in and build the social housing, the city council needs to approve the dwellings."
