GEORGE TOWN: For the second time in less than one year, the Ayer Itam market will be closed to traffic starting at 6am on Friday (Jan 15), says George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong.

The closure is due to the movement control order and to prevent crowding at the market area, he said.

However, he noted, the closure will only be from 6am until 2pm unlike the total closure during the MCO, last year. "Police will put up two barricades - one at the junction of Jalan Air Itam and Jalan Balik Pulau and another at the junction of Jalan Paya Terubong - Jalan Kampung Pisang to prevent any movement of vehicles going into the vicinity of the market," he said.He also advised motorists to use alternative roads, to avoid unnecessary traffic jams and to plan their journey.

"Motorists going to Balik Pulau can use alternative road from Jalan Air Itam - Jalan Zoo - Jalan Paya Terubong, whereas motorist who going to the George Town area can take Jalan Paya Terubong - Jalan Zoo - Jalan Ayer Itam," he said.
