Military detentions of Aung San Suu Kyi and other ruling party figures in Myanmar represent a dark turn for a once-bright opportunity. An economy that lured tourists and foreign companies such as Kirin may be headed back to isolation, writes JennHughes13

Myanmar's elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior figures from the ruling National League for Democracy were detained in morning raids, Reuters reported on Feb. 1, citing the party’s spokesman.

The Myanmar army said it had carried out the detentions in response to “election fraud”, according to a statement on a military-owned television station, Reuters reported, adding that a military spokesman did not answer phone calls seeking further comment.FILE PHOTO: Myanmar pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi arrives at Parliament buildings on the Stormont estate in Belfast, October 24, 2013
