Taking stock advice from your family can be dicey... one reader said: I lost about $80,000 after I sold stocks at the advice of my brother when the market took a nosedive at the beginning of the pandemic. How can I forgive him?

This time last year, when the market was nosediving, my older brother advised me to get out of the market, and go to cash to conserve my assets. It was only going to get worse, he proclaimed, and he had 40 years’ experience in the market.

If I’d ignored his advice and stayed the course, I’d be way ahead instead of way behind. To this day, I’m behind $55,000, so I’ve recovered some. I don’t feel good about being led down this path. Perhaps I have no one to blame for listening but myself.Accountability is everything. You can start forgiving your brother by forgiving yourself.

It was a hard lesson. But the fun part is figuring out what it is you have learned. 1. Don’t sell your stock during tumultuous times based on fear. 2. Don’t give up your own agency. 3. Don’t torture yourself by counting every rise and fall. That is what got you into this situation in the first place.

Don’t be a hoe

Well there is nothing to forgive him about. Is all ur fault..

Never ever listen to advice from a relative when it comes to stocks. But listen to them when they tell you about what they did right or wrong in the past to learn from it.

You take personal responsibility, no one pressed the sell button but yourself, grow a pair

Business and family is a fickle thing

That’s the question millions of Americans have to ask themselves since Trump. Who really needs forgiveness? The fool who spreads bullshit… or the fool who believes bullshit?

😂😂 “you can start forgiving your brother”. There’s nothing to forgive unless his brother held a gun to his head.If you didn’t make a ton by scoring some puts or getting great deals that made bank during the recovery then you have no business managing anyones $-even your own.

It is your fault, not his. No investment advice is good but your own to yourself.

Once you realize that we’re heading into a hyper inflationary period where all savings get wipe out anyway you’ll feel better

Very personal decision to sell. Is he somehow legally liable? It is not fun, but I would own it and start to play long.

Next time DYOR before taking advice. Every hasty decision are most times regrettable

We are responsible for our own lives. Don't blame others

You got to let that go. Money is an abundant thing.

Is this the same brother you had kicking fights with and dared each other to jump off the garage roof?

Damn! Imagine thinking that you can find any relative success when you are unable to accept responsibility for your own decisions. 😂 Good luck with that.

It was your decision to sell. Own it and move on.

Did he grab your arm and force you to hit the sell button? Oh, he didn’t, well then grow tf up and take responsibility for your own decisions.

You must be a Republican. No ability to take personal responsibility

Gotta lock in those loses when the market goes down! Your brother gave you great advice!

Me too I lose 70k because of benzinga

Wait another three months and youll be apologizing to him.

Your brother was right. It's your fault for not buying new shares at the much lower price.

Your FAKE scenario can be solved with a straw..now suck it up!

Start with ' I'm sorry, I'm an idiot....'

You should talk to an expert not your brother

Stop blaming your brother. He didn’t hit the sell button for you.

Meet him and tell your brother that you’re sorry for following his advise . Your brother should reply “no worry” better luck next time

Lol.

Still Holding 🥲

“Dont take money advice from broke people” learn it, repeat it, do it……..

No forgiveness necessary. It was ultimately

You man up and take responsibility for your own decisions

Sell low, buy high. Is that how he does it?

Stay invested and make that money back over the next few years. You lost 3-4 years of the plan, not the end of the world

He is ur brother .. not ur brain

Do be fair. We didn’t know how bad it could it get, if it would even stabilize soon or keep crashing I put in money I was ready to lose BUT I also had my money in safe stocks like Apple. I rode it out

Sold in the beginning?!? Hope you bought back in when they were still low.

Block

Ask how you can forgive your stupidity before you can even consider forgiving your brother. You can forgive another but have to live with your decisions. wealth stocks

impulse actions: The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is a prefrontal cortex region in the frontal lobes of the brain which is involved in the cognitive process of decision-making .In in humans it consists of Brodmann area 10, 11 and 47. 25-over? it's on you to make your own decisions

Because he's your brother. And he didn't sell your shares; you did. And if you really did lose $80,000 that probably means you have a lot more. My heart bleeds.

Put on you big boy pants and accept responsibility for your own actions. Unless he “forced” you to sell, and action taken is on you! Would you have been equally happy and would you have given an equal amount of credit had the outcome been different?

Better question is, how do you forgive yourself. It's all your responsibility in the end.

Do your own evaluation; make your own decision.

Sell low, buy high...or something like that lol

awesome pov

It's your fucking money; why do you need to forgive him.

desidaytrader

fuck his wife... oh no wait, you're poor. she won't like you

Could it have been worse?

When the market went down last March it was going down 5% a day. Did you wait until the last day then sold (that seems unrealistic). Did you not buy back in when it was going back up 2-3% a day? Even if you bought back in April or May you would’ve done just fine

Suck it up, buttercup.

Invest in other things out of the stock market and wait for a crash! Everything goes up has to come down one day!

You are a fucking adult. Own your actions.

timothysykes I always think this is a cartoon of u

You made the choice

Quantanamo LOL... your action, your responsibility! 🤷‍♂️

Quantanamo U pressed the sell button, though. So its on u my friend.

Quantanamo Don’t rely on other people for trading advice that simple, I’m sure you brother told you to do what he thought was best at the time for whatever reason, you can’t be mad at him for that lol

Quantanamo chrisscottsharp 😐

Quantanamo Wudn't that be Hard on you? If you wa t to be FORGIVEN, you FORGIVE!

Quantanamo Weak hands don’t get paid. It’s on you bro

Quantanamo nickkroll tired of seeing your face everywhere

Quantanamo I am recently in your country, looking for new friends

Quantanamo It was ultimately your decision to sell. Forgive yourself.

Quantanamo I would sit on his head.

Quantanamo The market nosedived last year?

Quantanamo If MTM is never an issue - just buy the dip & hold for the long term. If it is an issue - then sell all holdings on downside momentum and re-buy on upside momentum.

Quantanamo You have to forgive him and maybe pick up you ass and start again!!! A quote for you. “If you don’t believe it or don’t get it, I don’t have the time to try to convince you, sorry.” – Satoshi Nakamoto

Quantanamo

Quantanamo Expensive lesson.. also, forgive him, just don't forget

Quantanamo 😂 The Market will show you flames

Quantanamo Got to be a long term investor. Never sell in a downturn unless you need the $$.

Quantanamo horrible

good luck

$HEX keeps you from doing something as stupid as this. And it is immune to brothers or brother in laws.

thank you very much for your work

Forgive yourself before TheProphetGod for pulling your money out. The market only goes up.

I’m sure he never imagined the FED would be allowed to print $10 trillion and pump it into the markets.

All advice are not useful most times
