“They know how to put on an appearance.” Warren Buffett warns that poor managers can be personable—and that can be dangerous for companies.

Poor management is the top threat facing companies, according to Warren Buffett, who spoke out on the issue over the weekend.

The chief executive of conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway Inc. said choosing the wrong people to lead an organization is the No. 1 risk for businesses. In his five decades running Berkshire, Mr. Buffett said, he has seen a number of companies fail, from textile mills to department stores, and he suggested that a consistent element could be found in those failures beyond changing consumer behavior or shifting market forces.

“You get a guy or a woman in charge of it—they’re personable, the directors like ’em—they don’t know what they’re doing. But they know how to put on an appearance. That’s the biggest single danger,” Mr. Buffett said.

Oh great - last new managerial thought strategy we need is task master / micro managers. Bernie, stick to what you know.

Why yes. Ditto with politicians. Case in point. tfg & the SeditionCaucus

couldnt agree more most of them start with good intentions and these vanishes with the pressure and then starts to please the upper management and less of a work well done! All the training and classes go to a black wholelack of back bone and more about their claim to success

‘I do think it is stupid for states to drive out their wealthiest citizens.’ That sounds so right

Ambrosia_Ijebu So true.

We all know that bad/moronic managers and executives need people to like them since it is the only way they can remain employed. The qualified ones are usually run out by those who can slime their way around the company and turn others against those whose abilities pose a threat

Truly relevant idea, spotting impostors is not an easy task, as they could hide under cloaks of corporate clout 😐

You're damn right. And there's this dominant mentality that appearance of parties involved in business tells a lot about you and your company. Especially first sight appearance!

Buffett is talking about corporations but might as well be talking about government: “You get [someone in charge] —they’re personable, the directors like ’em—they don’t know what they’re doing. But they know how to put on an appearance. That’s the biggest single danger.'
