Laurel Hill was once the home of Abby Rockefeller Mauzé, the daughter of philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. and granddaughter of oil magnate John D. Rockefeller. She was a generous philanthropist to a myriad of causes. One of her most notable and enduring legacies is Greenacre Park, an intimate urban park in Manhattan’s Turtle Bay neighborhood that she gifted to the city in 1971.
An oasis of trees, flowers and a 25-foot cascade of water, the park was intended for city residents to find moments of serenity in a fast-paced world. That same sentiment apparently was in mind for Laurel Hill. After Rockefeller Mauzé bought the home, she acquired neighboring lots, numbering 10 over time, to create her tranquil green space with two miles of walking trails and an abundance of gardens.
