The Herald's View: Business will need more help to get through this long lockdown

While the COVID-19 pandemic is primarily a health crisis, NSW employment data on Thursday has provided an early sign of how much damage the outbreak and the prolonged lockdown are doing to the economy.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said on Thursday that she would not be able to re-open the economy significantly until dual vaccination rates reach 70 per cent. September and October will be “challenging”. NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet fought hard to convince the federal government to co-fund the JobSaver payments for businesses in NSW COVID-19 hotspots that suffered a drop in revenue.

The Australian Council of Social Service is calling on the federal government to give all people on welfare benefits a disaster payment of $200 a week regardless of whether they were working extra hours before lockdown.
