JOHOR BARU: In less than three years after graduation, a good coder can earn up to RM6,000 a month, says the southern region chairman for the Small and Medium Enterprises Association (Samenta), Louis Ooi.

In software engineering, a coder is the most junior member of the team, responsible for punching out code that makes the software perform specific functions. Ooi said the chief software engineer, who could command a salary of RM12,000 to RM15,000 a month, must have over 10 years’ experience and be able to design, develop, maintain, test and evaluate the whole system.“They may even lack interpersonal skills. But when you clearly tell them what you want the software to do, you will be amazed by the logic of their programming,” he said.“You might find applicants with a degree in physics or chemistry, but they learnt coding and love it.

“Eventually, the company had a team of about 100 coders because every carmaker wanted their dashboards to be unique.Article type: metered
