Lyric Opera’s ‘Tosca’ shatters two glass ceilings: A record number of women are involved in creative leadership and the leads are Black artists.

Back when she got her start on the podium as an undergrad studying composition, Eun Sun Kim says becoming an opera conductor “was not at all in my agenda.”

“It was just a pure coincidence — you don’t want to make a fairy tale out of it,” Kim says, audibly if not visibly shrugging from her perch in a downtown high-rise. “But, of course, every time I perform ‘La Bohème,’ I have this visceral memory of being in my early 20s, learning my 1-2-3-4s.

Lyric’s “Tosca” resuscitates a period-appropriate Jean-Pierre Ponnelle set minted at San Francisco Opera in 1972. It also — finally — brings Bradley and Thomas to the same stage, two years after their canceled 2020 production of “Ernani” in San Francisco that was to be under Kim’s baton.

But Tosca’s such an actress. She’s all types of different emotions and feelings,” Bradley says, citing Maria Callas’s 1964 Covent Garden interpretation as a special inspiration.
