Maybe be a little less chill about recreational weed.

Drew Sheneman | The Star-Ledger

It’s been more than a year and a half since the voters of New Jersey approved the establishment of a recreational cannabis market. The vote wasn’t called The Reefer-endum and I’m still angry at the lost marketing opportunity, but I digress. It seems like a year and a half, even if you’re taking your time and getting it right, there has been enough time to institute a policy the electorate overwhelmingly approved.

The reasoning, this time, is that the commission believes we are about 100,000 pounds of weed short if we’re going to meet the needs of the recreational market without impacting the medical marijuana market. It should be noted that many state-approved dispensaries dispute this claim and say they are stuffed to the gills with weed in anticipation that the market was set to open. Have I mentioned that weed is perishable? That’s something I learned this week.

The folks trying to sell you recreational marijuana aren’t the only ones getting fed up with the CRC and its glacial pace. Gov. Phil Murphy and the Democratic leadership are getting together to figure out how to get the CRC to pick up the pace. It didn’t sound like a suggestion when Murphy said he expects the market to be open in a matter of weeks, not months.
