Oil and gas producers say they are already paying more tax and an extra levy would damage confidence.

Oil and gas producers have hit back at calls for a windfall tax on their profits, saying they are already paying more tax as a result of price rises.

But profits have soared this year after sharp price increases in energy prices, prompting calls for those "exceptional" profits to be subject to a windfall levy. Companies are also countering the threat of a windfall tax by pointing to their plans to spend on further developments for oil and gas, if they are allowed to, and some are switching their emphasis to renewable energy.

Ministers have recently been pushing for further commitments from energy producers to invest, in response to the calls for a windfall tax. That has put more pressure on the industry to make its case. "We are proud that we are able to help by contributing a predicted £7.8bn in UK taxes this year alone.

They should cut the price of Oil and Gas charged to customers. There should be a cap of 22% profit as the amount of profit they can make in any given situation. They should be penalised if they make more than that. This way prices will stay affordable.200% profit is unacceptable.

Oh dear. That's the loan shark chancellor Sunak frightened if the 'windfall tax' he stole from Labour.

Could be a test case for all big industries to pay their fair share of taxes. Because we know they don't- pure profiteering while the general public go to the wall!

They’ve got us by the nuts, and all we do is go ‘squeeze a little harder please’! Turn it off, use far less until they feel the squeeze, then find a viable eco-friendly alternative that removes their grip permanently and lets fossil fuel companies become tomorrows fossils.

Why didn't she'll pay no tax in 2020

Name which ones and get them to expand on their reasoning please.

PostHumanity ...It is a synbio odyssey Our biotech slavery Domestication on integrated technology When we power devices Do you know what the price is For living in wireless luxury

VampireDevices ..They say those vampire devices Will suck your funding away They pollute us and the planet In so many different ways It is far from fair or laudable These hypergames we play With the tech and energy firms That have made us their slaves

Of course they do.

No need for a windfall tax . The public wouldn’t see a great deal from it . Just get them to CUT the PRICES . To consumers logical.!!

At last Johnson and Sunak have found a representative of the oil and gas industry who'll play ball.

In the meantime….

How strange company want to keep their extraordinary profit! If gvt don't intervene to rebalance the scales away from big business to ordinary people then what's the point in gvt ?

GaryNTrader If they did not spend so much buying back their own shares to drive the share price up I might have some sympathy

All this articles talks about is how much profit they would loose if there was a tax. Seems to me it shouldn’t be a choice. Also why on earth would they stop investing in a country they make so much profit on?

Ah now the Buffoon Broadcasting Corporation is pushing the government narrative once again

Good

Sh1t journalism, just repeating what the chancellor has incorrectly indicated, rather than any direct interviews with CEOs of the energy companies.

2 very simple options. Stop this net zero climate nonsense or lift sanctions on russia. Both we could do, but our government couldn't give 2 shits about their own people

would it not be a better idea to subsidies the price of petrol/diesel prices bu 40/50p a litre as this is someting they can control, and has a knock on effect on everting we buy

the windfall tax is a bad idea as it is a temporary benefit in a prolonged crisis and labour have oversold its worth

You mean the scum getting rich from the destruction of our planet? You're choosing to defend those guys?

'Oil and gas producers have hit back at calls for a windfall tax... saying they are already paying more tax as a result of price rises.' Because we have passed on all extra charges, (and increased standing charges), and have made £millions we have to pay more tax. Not fair?

Strange headline after BP's current CEO was quoted in Parliament saying a windfall tax wouldn't effect investment.

So if the public get a windfall tax from these people what is stopping them doubling prices in 12 months to get their money back

Why had the CEO of BP gone from 'a windfall tax won't make a difference ' to 'we must not have one' in only two weeks. Moving towards the government narrative. A Gong been promised so he stops making Johnson look bad?

17/22 of the cabinet have not declared their UK tax status. Does this mean the cabinet are economic migrants ?
