More than 100 actors and public figures in the UK have put their name to an open letter calling for better onscreen representation of older women, to help fight “entrenched ageism” of the entertainment industry.

In the letter, the Acting Your Age Campaign complains that women in the UK only have a “shelf life” on screen while their male colleagues have a “whole life”, and calls for “a parity pledge”, with equal representation in the UK between men and women over 45.

Writer/performer dramas and comedy commissioning to feature 50:50 age and gender parity in programming, and for all broadcaster diversity initiatives to incorporate age

Studios want to make money, and they will cast accordingly. The actor has to fit the role. It's the same for men. E.g. in general an 18 year old wouldn't be believable in the role of an experienced businessman.

The parts need to be written for the characters for the actors to be cast. Essentially if the parts aren’t being written they won’t be able to do it. So whoever is telling writers what they want in a show/movie is the problem
