Breaking: NSW Energy Minister Matt Kean has been given emergency powers to direct coal companies to provide fuel to electricity generators

A senior government source with knowledge of the situation but not authorised to comment publicly confirmed “precautionary measures were being taken to address concerns that stockpiles of coal are running low at some generators.”

The documents show the seriousness with which the NSW government was considering prolonging the life of the coal-fired Eraring station, which provides 20 per cent of NSW’s energy. The government is also hoping to fast-track the roll-out of its renewable energy zones through a new financing fund which will encourage private investment.

The documents say: “The state has appointed or is well advanced in appointing a full suite of advisers to be able to engage with you to meet this timeline”. “The NSW government’s non-negotiable objectives in the discussion were to ensure reliability, downward pressure on electricity prices and that any costs to NSW taxpayers were avoided or minimised,” Kean said in a statement.

What can go wrong?

you would think the government had emergency powers as a basic function of governing......?

I always thought Kean was pushing for renewables not coal. A week seems a very longtime in climate change politics.

'Chickens coming home to roost' comes to mind thanksAlbo thanksGreens

Lol. How ironic. Matt Kean is out there looking for coal to keep the lights on in NSW. You can’t make this stuff up 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

And he'll shut them down if they dont! OhWait

Kean recommends that households can hug their big TV for extra warmth during energy crisis ?

What investigation has been undertaken by the SMH to assess whether Liberal Party donor and coal baron Trevor St Baker has been involved in exacerbating the energy crisis since the Liberal Party lost the election?

OK, are you allowed to make this up? I wanna know before I declare that CANT MAKE THIS SHIT UP!

so, nothings changed then?
