Canada Day has kicked off the unofficial start of summer, and the tourism sector is hopeful the first season in three years largely free of COVID-19 restrictions will marshal a much-needed boost for a pandemic-stricken industry.

It has been slow to bounce back as new COVID-19 variants and public health measures deterred domestic and foreign travellers, but as cases drop and restrictions lift there are signs of recovery across the country.

And while there is optimism, the most recent Statistics Canada numbers show the recovery is far from complete. Off the coast of Newfoundland, whale watching boats loaded with tourists are back in Atlantic waters. Mike Gatherall, director of Gatherall's Puffin and Whale Watch south of St. John's, said business is booming.

In the Toronto-area, hotel occupancy surpassed 80 per cent in June for the first since the pandemic started, said Destination Toronto executive vice-president Andrew Weir. He had to turn down some requests this spring as he scrambled to find guides, after the business had scaled back to a skeleton operation during the pandemic.

Seriously?

Well no kidding. I believe the evidence would be with the federally backed airline in panic mode

You’re using an older picture of Ottawa to highlight “optimism”? Stop hiding the lies from the public.

Not unless they end the border restrictions

No one is coming to Canada because they don’t understand what’s required of them. (nvm that for some reason unvaccinated people still can’t visit) And even if they did it’s getting harder to get a flight. If they do get a flight, good luck getting through the airport.

Hahah from the jabbed lol spreading the shed love.

Lockdown stricken.

Nah

The unjabbed can’t enter Canada 🙄

Completely ignoring the fact that the airports are in utter chaos and you have to line up for days just to get your passport.

Only because they can’t get on the plane …. SMH … couldn’t see the airports being busier this year eh travel minister !?!

Better be up to date with your vaccination status. What are we up to 5 now?

Ya the airports seem great! 😆😆😆😆
