Make-up brands and retailers are now introducing recycling programs so old cosmetics waste can be turned into new products, but how effective are they and what makes the packaging so hard to recycle in the first place?

What the waste ends up as depends on the company that is doing the recycling and what the packaging was made out of.It said some hard plastics could be shredded and used as a concrete additive, while glass could be crushed and used as a sand replacement for buildings in the construction industry.

MAC Cosmetics is also part of that trial, which will help investigate how feasible a national beauty recycling scheme is.A spokesperson from the federal Department of Environment said it was funding the trial because cosmetics were difficult to recycle "through normal processes". Jennie Downes, a researcher from Monash University's Sustainable Development Institute, said recycling cosmetic products was in its early days and not yet economically viable.

They have difficulty accepting aerosols and nail polish, which are made up of complex materials and can also be flammable.

Yes you’re wearing one on your face

Oh you mean spent wind turbines and solar panels ?

Through the middle of last year, approximately 130 billion face masks entered landfill every month, with a large % of those polluting the environment, all of this for little to no real impact, there's the real environmental disaster you need to write about.

And….

Do wind turbine blades next……

Lisa_Wilkinson - You should start the trend; 1) No makeup on air. 2) Be better for the environment

Lead from the front on this no more make up for anyone on your news shows. Its for the greater good of the environment..

Maybe abc news presenters should set an example and go on camera without make up

But more importantly, are you pathetic enough to think you need makeup to look better. Got news for you, it doesn't work.

Just don't tell them we can't recycle solar panels yet!

Stop it. Honestly. Just stop. The climate changes. Dropping the s off the end equals global socialism. Wake up !!!

Disgraceful build up of waste

And you’re only singleling out Australia? How about the United States how about Canada ,South America how about Russia ,China

Do face masks next.
