I spent £10 at Blackburn Market to see if it was better than discount supermarkets and now I'm questioning my life choices

Shopping is getting more expensive than ever. And the rising cost of living is causing everyone, no matter their income, to the purse strings and see how their monthly budgets stack up.

Scott Stewart Fruit and Veg is where I visited and the staff were friendly and extremely helpful for customers that were coming and going as I carefully chose my items to fit my budget. Taken aback by the sheer choice and array of carefully laid out fresh fruit and veg, I took my time selecting what I thought I would need for the week ahead and to fit my £10 budget.

As a firm advocate of all things satsumas, tangerines and clementines - I had to go for the satsumas which cost me £1 for 3, maybe slightly expensive compared to a supermarket but it looked fresh and appealing, so I didn’t mind at all. Totting up my shop here, it came to a cool £4.20 which I expected and I trotted off on my merry way to find where else I could spend my budget.

Knowing I’d regret a whole one, I decided to get it sliced as to avoid future lopsided sandwiches. This one came to a total of £2.10, definitely more expensive than my usual Lidl £1.19 bloomer, but I buy it in the hope it’s worth the dough. I realise that for any essential shop, some sort of protein has to be involved. With only £1.47 left to spend, I know it's a stretch but definitely worth an ask to one of the few butchers that can be seen proudly displaying their meat inside this playground of fresh produce and keen foodies.
