The Bank of England and the Royal Mint face the task of withdrawing currency with the Queen’s image from circulation and replacing it with money bearing the portrait of King Charles III.

For almost 70 years, the Queen’s image has appeared on the United Kingdom’s coins, with different portraits of her profile as she aged. She was featured on the nation’s banknotes for more than 60 years, the first British monarch to do so. Her portrait also features on the currency of several countries that were formerly under British rule. Since 1953, one year after the Queen took the throne, UK coins have borne five different versions of her portrait.

No changes yet The Royal Mint said in a statement on its website that coins bearing the image of the Queen “remain legal tender and in circulation,” and that their production would continue as usual during “this period of respectful mourning.” The Bank of England said that the Queen’s “iconic portraits [were] synonymous” with some of its most important work. “Current banknotes featuring the image of Her Majesty The Queen will continue to be legal tender,” it said in a Thursday statement.

MaryKenny4 Why? When I was a kid in the 1950's and 60's, long pre decimal currency, apart from the Queen, we got lots of George VI coins, sometimes a George V, very occasionally an Edward VII and once in a blue moon we'd get a Victorian penny still in circulation. No problem

So thats wot a £50 note looks like

And do it again in the matter of months 😉

Why would they do that?

I knew it was gonna change

That’s not necessary, both notes can stay in circulation. British public will love to have bank notes with Queen’s photo side by side with that of the King.

It doesn't happen all at once. The new notes get issued and old ones taken out when old like normal. There was a time last century when there were 3 different monarchs on coins and notes.

Poll: AbolishTheMonarchy?

Another white face! How about some diversity

No they won’t. The next batch will have KC on both coins and notes. However the existing currency, both notes and coins will still be in circulation for several years. It will be gradually taken out of circulation.

King Charles on the front and Queen Elizabeth on the back?

So inflation rate is not an issue, poundnote is. Great.

That's why the name United Kingdom. Good luck on another expensive endeavor history

Late Queen Elizabeth II £50 notes will be worth Ten times it face value in the collectors market as they are the least circulated tender

Just put a big picture of dumbo on it everyone will get the picture lol

Euro Coins are valid ad vitam aeternam with some European Kings and Queens on their face

yeah, just like what government did in Thailand

The post boxes won’t be changed. There are many still bearing the letter GR for the King’s grandfather.

The bank of England has not announced any changes and won't under after the 17 days of mourning have passed. They will not recall all currency, it will just be gradually phased out. The queens father was still legal tender 40 years after his death.

Why? Plenty of people will keep paper snd coins for keep sakes. Keep the remainder circulating until it needs to be replaced.

Interesting 🤔

No they don't. Just like the red post boxes, currency will be replaced when necessary, they don't 'call in' the existing money just to change the image of the monarch.

Oh joy. Photogenic lot.

I can do these services for $30/hr 1- Writing (theses, task activity) and typing, making slides 2- Reading and summarizing books 3- Being by your side and accompanying you in any way or in a happy or sad party 4- Listening to the stories of your life 5- save you from loneliness

I don’t think they are obliged to replace currency, just start minting with the new King’s image.

Probably should have had stacks of that shit in a vault ready a decade or 2 ago. Matter of fact. Might as well start doing mock ups of William.

What will probably happen as old notes need replacing the new ones will be made. They wont just replace them all. Same with stamps and passports and everything else. When they need replacing the new ones will be of charles

Is it really necessary? This is just absurd
