Instead of a fast-food restaurant, now Phoenix residents will have a place to walk, bike and hang out in at the former Duke Photography building.

A Phoenix developer and architect firm are teaming up to reuse the former Duke Photography building in Phoenix and transform it into a neighborhood market for the surrounding community.

Now Klusman is working with 180 Degrees Design + Build to open a neighborhood market and retail space in the building, while preserving Duke's signs and incorporating the photographer's crown logo into features such as bike racks and the exterior design. The building totals nearly 10,000 square feet and will comprise a conglomerate of local retail, the architect firm said.

"These are the kind of projects we typically work on with him, the more complicated and challenging ones, which for us are a lot of fun — they actually have a lot more impact at the end of the day on the communities we get to work with," he said. "One of our goals was to limit the amount of asphalt on the site, so lowering the heat-island effect that we get in central Phoenix by using open pavers, that allow moisture to drain through it," Vincent said.Overall, the firm said it drew inspiration for the reuse project from a European grocery concept for it sense of place.
