In just 2 weeks South African Grade 12 learners across the country will sit for their final matric exams – the National Senior Certificate Exams (NSC).

The Free State was leading provinces in terms of results, achieving 85.7%, an improvement of 0.6% from 2020;

“by 2030, South Africans should have access to education and training of the highest quality, leading to significantly improved learners’ outcomes. The performance of South African learners in international standardised tests, should be comparable to the performance of learners from countries at a similar level of development and with similar levels of access.”

“For instance, in 2018, for every 100 young women writing matric, there were only 80 young men. Boys are dropping out at a higher rate,” said the campaign. The statistics do not reveal how many of these young girls are in matric, but early and unintended pregnancy can severely disrupt a young person’s chances of completing school with a matric certificate. Experts do say that there is a mutually-reinforcing relationship between pregnancy and dropout: girls who become pregnant are more likely to drop out, and those who leave school are more likely to become pregnant.

We wish them well although the quality of basic education in the country is below par.
