Workplace bias and tone policing can make Black employees feel like they don’t belong in corporate Canada. But employers can take steps to create a more welcoming culture

Job postings and corporate ‘About Us’ pages often include a statement about the company fostering an environment where employees can bring their ‘whole selves’ to work.“I think it’s a scam,” laughs Melanie Blackman-Gushway, who has worked in postsecondary education in the Toronto area for 10 years. “That’s my dream. That’s my vision [for] any place that I work, but the reality is that’s not the case.

Ms. Sinclair says bringing your whole self to work is a great goal, “if you can,” but that “there is inherent risk that comes with bringing your full self to work for Black people.”stated that Black Canadians faced disproportionate financial hardships during COVID-19. Unemployment rates for Black Canadians were higher during the pandemic and on average, they weren’t paid as much as nonvisible minority Canadians.

“Chances are your Black employees may not be bringing their full selves to work for many reasons that are linked to systemic barriers, that are linked to intersectionalities, but that are also linked to your own workplace culture,” she says. “I think [employers] have to own and acknowledge that if you have provided some training and you did a series of events for Black History Month, it’s not just checked and done.”Ms.

“I think sometimes [tone policing of Black employees] is because of some deep, inherent bias and deeply inherent systemic racism and views on ‘knowing your place,’” she says. “We don’t have quite as much privilege to speak our minds without fear of negative impact at times. I’m not saying all the time, but I would say at times it can be risky, especially on topics of diversity, equity and inclusion.

She notes that non-Black senior leaders can show empathy for Black employees by doing some introspection about whether they themselves are being authentic at work.

Keep trying to make it so. If you can't find the swastikas, I'm sure you'll paint them.

Companies can have my professional side. Not my private life. Not how I behave around friends.

If everyone brought their whole selves to work it would be a nightmare.

No. I want people to do their job. That's it. If their identity gets in the way of doing that, then the job is not for them.

Some of us have figured out that anti-racism is a hack, designed not to seek equality but permanent grievance and a state of infantile helplessness, to be exploited as a forever renewable resource cynically and eternally.

Their not hiding their true feelings anymore.

Companies want employees to ‘bring their whole selves to work Until they share their view that women don't have dicks or go against the woke religion in any way

You mean like James Demore?

we had a big call yesterday at work. Where they outlined the importance of being 'Our authentic selves' at work... Followed by a lecture on microaggressions and telling us 'if you say white privilege doesn't exist, that's violence, don't say it or you'll be dismissed'

The day you bring your 'whole self' to work, you will be fired - don't fall for it

Yawn.

More important perhaps is: what makes a company successful? Sometimes referred to as corporate culture. Companies don’t want their employees doing their own thing? Do it our way because it works. Can the 2 ideas exist together?

Kinda racist but sure...

Just stop printing this bullcrap. Please.

Late Stage Race Marxism ....

Jussie Smollett brought his whole self to work last weekend. It was indeed risky.

More woke propaganda. We’re wasting our time on the planet with such nonsense. wokeisamentaldisorder

More extremist claims with zero empirical evidence.

Why would anyone want their boss, or most of their co-workers, to know everything about them?

Yeah, well, that's a terrible idea for anyone.

Omg. Are we doing this. Just stop.

once again people (who i assume are white liberals) paint Black people as a monolith by saying 'Well Black people said/think/are... followed by a stereotype' Imagine interviewing a few white people and then saying 'well white people are/want ...'

Always with the othering of black people, it’s just so cringe. The type of black person who writes this crap and believes in it are just insufferable

‘bring their whole selves to work.’ What does it mean? With phobias, snoring and feet odor? What companies want that?!

? 🙄

Remember a time when news organizations actually reported the news?🤡

🤡🤡🤡

Dear god this is a pretty good stretch. In any workplace you watch what you say regardless of who you are. Most higher ups don’t really want to hear your opinions unless it supports their preconceived beliefs. That’s not a color thing, it’s a bad boss thing.

Race Marxism on life support.

Bull. F***ing. Shit.

I don't want to give my whole self at work... My whole self is none of your f'in business Corporations need LESS power on our lives... You don't pay me to represent the company at all-times... There needs to be a delineation of where work and my own life begins and ends

Can you explain how this isn’t true for anyone?

No wonder so few go across the pay wall for The Globe’s racist woke “crap” articles. My god.

Oh god. 😂. For “black” professionals. What a shame we’re segregating everything and everyone. Since The Globe & Mail became so “woke” and so drearily left Canadian, junk articles like this prevail.

Didn't work out so well for James Damore either.

Self absorbed in the extreme

Black, white, green, keep 80% of your ass at home. “Bring your whole self to work” is a marketing strategy. They’re still gonna fire anyone whose self they don’t like. It’s a job. Don’t over complicate it

wtf

Not being your “whole selves” is part of being professional.

The items mentioned are laughable.

How about professionalism in the workplace? Work is not a high school project.

It's complicated when you leave your brain at home.....

They are only going to stop this nonsense when their funding is pulled.

Who pays to keep your newspaper open? I mean seriously, who reads this and says to themselves, gee, I want to buy this?

black people are reading this and cringing

My “whole self” might get me fired. At the very least I’d be ostracized 😀

lol.. more victimhood. you know i'm just truly amazed black folks somehow were able to survive generation upon generation before covid came along

I don't care what colour you are, what gender you are, hell what you worship or not. I want qualified ppl to do a job. That's it. What the heck is this drivel? How can beingbwoke be so damn racist?

This is a stupid story written because it was discussed on Joe Rogan recently... This isn't true or news it's fabricated crap meant only to devide and ruffle society... Crap

You are racist as hell if you think we people of colour are useless without your divine white interventions.

The whole idea of bringing your whole self to a job is insane. Like, for anyone. Does anybody want Fred from accounting to be at the water cooler talking about how his psoriasis medication gives him painful 24 hour errections? Doesn't really matter what his skin color is

Oh, the woke snowflakes have it tough...what to do what to do...

I see victims everywhere....everywhere!

I always leave my spleen, a femur, a kidney and my medulla oblongata behind when I go to work

The most corrosive , toxic and divisive force in society today : MEDIA and the parasites that feed them and are feed by them

“there is inherent risk that comes with bringing your full self to work for Black people.” Do you not see how racist this is? Making broad stereotypes like this demeans all the black people who fit in fine. It suggests hiring Black people is problematic because they won’t fit in

Talk about the soft racism of lowered expectations.

I always only send my ass and family jewels into work, don't pay enough to send my ' whole selves'

Is there something fundamentally wrong with professionals of high melatonin content that makes them incapable of participating in corporate culture? Should we pity these poor victims of corporate culture and let them create a new one that caters specifically to them?

What does race have to do with it?

...Founder of Black HR Professionals of Cda, a 'not-for-profit'. Also, director of people and culture at a technology firm. Getting paid to grift about hairstyles. Probably drawing salary from the 'non-profit' too. It's easier to whine about Cda than do actual tech work.

🙄

Wear dreadlocks if you want. Literally no-body cares. Literally no-body. But don't bring your whole self to work, no-body does that. LOL.

Are you saying that black employees a risk to hire? That's REALLY racist.

Another G&M piece on 'black (non) issues'. The absurdity is - editors don't even care how silly these are, as long as it is about a 'protected class'. Perfect example - the soft bigotry of 'low expectations'

Counting the days until you are defunded…

Why do you treat black people like inferior beings?

🤮

It's hard seeing a once reputable publication decay to the level of woke internet click bait. Maybe stick to the government funded shilling instead?

Companies want, my God, it don't work about!

Reading Canadian media you’d be rightly confused about the obsession with “black” people, the vast majority of which in Canada are immigrants since the 1970s. 2% of Canada is “black”, not even 20% of “visible minorities” in Canada. We are not the United States.

Hey danielleselias! Remember was talked about ALL THE TIME in our work?

What would be hard is being a black conservative that rejects wokeness and identity politics.

Just go to work and do work. Keep your personal life personal and that goes for everyone.
