Stranger Things and Jeffrey Dahmer boost Netflix as it shakes up business model | _thmitchell

A series about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer has proved to be a big winner for Netflix.became Netflix’s second most-watched show of all time, with 1.35 billion hours viewed within the first 28 days of release.is the second most-viewed English Netflix series and the fourth highest across any language. The upswing means Netflix now has 223 million subscribers worldwide, and the company predicts it will pick up another 4.

“We’re still not growing as fast as we’d like,” Spencer Neumann, Netflix’s chief financial officer, said during the company’s earnings call. “We are building momentum, we are pleased with our progress, but we know we still have a lot more work to do.” Part of that work includes a plan to crack down on password sharing. Earlier this year, the company announced that it suspected passwords were being shared with an additional 100 million households.Netflix intends to announce a feature called Profile Transfer which encourages people who have been borrowing accounts to create their own. The company will also encourage people sharing their accounts to create sub-accounts to pay for friends or family to use theirs.

This latest update follows a recent announcement that Netflix would introduce advertising on its service to attract more customers with a lower-cost subscription. Australia is one of 12 countries that will be offered Netflix’s new ad-based budget subscription plan that will be rolled out next month. The Basic with Ads plan will cost $6.99 per month in Australia, four dollars less than the cheapest ad-free plan currently available. Subscribers to the new plan will be shown up to five minutes of ads per hour of viewing.
