I would probably be laughing if you were to tell me five years ago, when I was 27 years’ old, that I would give up my regular income so that I could be a full-time parent.

My husband and I both grew up in a single-parent family, so that meant that our mothers had to work and provide for the family on their own.For nearly seven years while I was single, I had built my wedding photography business on my own, and over the years I picked up skills in sales and photography.

I suppose that rising costs of living have also contributed to the fact that more women prefer to go out to work. Our parents are also getting old, and rather than tying them down to caring for their grandchildren, we thought they deserve to “retire” from these duties too.MAKING THINGS WORKI wanted to be the first to witness his first steps, hear him say his first words, and introduce him to freshly prepared meals.

Under this scheme, I was able to get up to 16 weeks’ paid leave because I had lost income from ceasing to be actively working during my maternity period. All the years of filing my annual revenue properly to pay taxes finally paid off. I know that I can also rely on my son’s grandmothers to care for him on our behalf, especially for those times when both my husband and I are occupied due to work.
