By Rich Nickel – Contributing writerEarning a college degree can be a life-changing accomplishment, benefiting not only the recipient but also Arizona as a whole. In fact, increasing education attainment — the number of adults with a college degree or postsecondary certificate — in Arizona to 60% would pump more than $3.5 billion in personal income and tax revenue into the state annually. Reaching our attainment goal starts with increasing enrollment across all student populations.
With limited state funding and resources, many businesses have jumped in to help fill in the gaps in educational funding to help ensure that Arizona has an educated workforce so that our economy can thrive into the future. Freeport-McMoRan Inc., an international mining company headquartered in Phoenix, sets a solid example for others.
This funding is helping students like April Victor, a Freeport-McMoRan scholarship recipient, who went back to school after a seven-year hiatus and completed her associate degree in computer information at Arizona Eastern College. Tyler Shurley, one of the recipients of the recently established Navajo Code Talker Scholarships, is also feeling the impact of this investment. Shurley grew up with a painting of the Navajo Code Talkers in his room.
