Scientists found three bottles of water they bought in Pretoria – a quarter of the brands they sampled – were not fit for human consumption.
Half the samples exceeded the WHO limit for lead, and the highest concentration of manganese found may also pose a health risk. The scientists went shopping at supermarkets and spaza shops between April and June 2021, returning to their lab with dozens of bottles of"natural spring water","prepared water", and"mineral water".
The next finding was that chromium levels in all the samples were between four and five times the WHO maximum allowable limit. All the Pretoria water samples had at least three times the level of nickel recommended by the WHO, and Olowoyo’s team says it was probably due to underground water’s “prolonged and direct exposure to minerals”, and could also come from power plants, mines and refineries., “nickel contact can cause a variety of side effects on human health, such as allergy, cardiovascular and kidney diseases, lung fibrosis, and lung and nasal cancer”.
Three of the bottled waters tested, referred to as samples 6, 9, and 12,"may be considered unsafe for human consumption due to the levels of toxic trace metals present in the samples", said the study authors., and Olowoyo’s team says the belief that it is safe and pure makes it one of the fastest-growing commercial products in developing and developed countries.
HealthZA say something
Nice article but for now it’s giving “gossip”. What are we to do with this information now? Go into panic?
Why write the story if you're not going to reveal the brands in question?!?
Don't bother opening, they don't tell you which brands
Names
Food industry standards are very strict nowadays worldwide. Each batch should have a QC process that includes batch certs of analysis listing standard tests and readings. How we're these batches passed? Are these renowned brands?
Well which ones are they? Wtf is the point this article then?

BISouthAfrica Primarily bottled water that is sold in informal settlements and the label is 'spring water' do not buy
BISouthAfrica The toxic ones were probably filled from a municipal supply of 'treated' water. (And people complain about seawater quality on Durban beaches?)
BISouthAfrica Are you to release the names of the ones that will kill us? Or just keep us guessing. What the plan here
Drop the names! Hao what kind of journalism is this. Using our lives as click bait.
We have 2 possibilities here, the article sensationalizes toxicity (what does 3* a limit signify, what is its LTEL?), or by not reporting the relevant brands are selective in their journalistic responsibility. Which is it ?
Please name the 3 brands. I drink bottled water all the time.
