Beyond the Kitchen Table designs and builds websites for entrepreneurs and small business owners running service-based companies. The websites are strategically designed to bring in more customers for my clients. The revenue from this element of the business is generally about £2,500 a month. I also host and maintain websites, which brings in revenue of about £1,000 a month.
When it came to knowing whether to go down the sole trader or limited company route, I was very clear I wanted a divide between my personal finances and my business finances. For me it was a no-brainer to go down the route of setting up Beyond the Kitchen Table as a limited company. There are pros and cons involved in owning your own business, but I love running mine! Like many of my clients I spent a lot of time working in a corporate environment before finding my true passion. I can be in charge of my own time and have the flexibility to work when I want – no one cares if their website is built at 10am or 10pm. I can be more present for my family and don’t have to deal with office politics.
In reality, things never go to plan all the time when running a business. In the early days I had a client who needed a website developed, but she kept changing her mind about what she wanted. About 40 hours of my time ended up being wasted. Nowadays, the design is fully agreed at an early stage in the process, so this sort of problem can’t crop up again.
