Cut the toytown business speak when small businesses are struggling to survive UK economic crisis
The kind of idle corporate balderdash we are still hearing is out of sync with the mindset of the average business owner – and the state of the economyThe other day I received an email from some business title or other with the subject field: “The need-to-know terms for business leaders in 2023.” I nearly choked on my Shreddies.
Would you please, for God’s sake, stop referring to us as “business leaders”? This kind of toytown business speak is rabidly out of touch with the average person running one. I did a post about it on LinkedIn and everyone appeared to agree. The phrase “business leader” presupposes a sense of calm and balance, a rational and coherent personality able to stand apart from the ebb and flow of the economy.
Back on Planet Earth, most small business owners have about 30 personalities because we live in a constant state of stress, anxiety and borderline terror. Running a business is insanity, squared.
