The president of The Thunderbirds organization assesses the economic impact of the annual WM Phoenix Open golf tournament. phoenix

By Michael W. Golding – Contributing writerThe 88th edition of the WM Phoenix Open is just weeks away. This unique stop on the PGA Tour — highly recognized as one of the best-attended sporting events in the world — not only brings the community together, but “The People’s Open” is a huge factor in Arizona’s economy.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people travel to the desert for our warm February weather — this year even more so thanks to the Super Bowl being played across town from the TPC Scottsdale. Obviously, the result is a huge increase in outsider spending. Seidman estimates that 126,477 out-of-state visitors spent an average $260.20 per person per day while here. In addition, the economic activity spurred by the event created incremental state and local sales tax revenue. The money raised from the WM Phoenix Open is being redistributed back to the people that call Arizona home.

Everything we do at the WM Phoenix Open is driven towards helping this community be a better place to live. Our goal is to grow the money raised for our local community and charities in need every single year.
