Companies that self-report wrongdoing to the Justice Department won’t be prosecuted if they fully cooperate with investigators and fix underlying problems

WASHINGTON—The Justice Department is expanding its leniency policies to persuade companies to take one of the biggest risks when it comes to dealing with the government: reporting their own misconduct to prosecutors.

Companies that disclose wrongdoing to the Justice Department won’t be prosecuted if they fully cooperate with investigators and fix the underlying problems, including any shortcomings in their compliance programs, according to Assistant Attorney General Kenneth Polite Jr., who leads the criminal division.
