In 2007, two self-proclaimed"technophiles", Jonathan Smit and Andy Higgins, developed a payments platform that started with humble ambitions of helping small businesses receive payments from online shoppers. It was initially a tiny one-man startup, with Higgins providing the financial backing. Five years later, it bought the global e-commerce platform Shopify. And over a decade later, it was servicing 80 000 businesses.
