CTV Toronto... a part of the CTV News Video NetworkWe see it all the time. Lien for 3800 on title and buy out 7200 crazy that these companies get away with it. Services charges and admin fees and nothing can be done.
And another thing, Living in B.C I have never heard of anyone renting or rent to own a water heater or furnace. This must be a Central or Eastern Canada thing. Replaced water tank last year for $1800 installed and old one removed.
Guy had a tenant who got a doorbell camera installed, missed a payment, now owner had a lien on his house, couldn't sell property. He fought it to no prevail. Ended up costing almost $11,000 in total including his lawyer. Now he's suing his tenant but unlikely to paid. SCAM!
This is a 101 scam, anything thats attached to a house, even doorbell cameras they can put a lien on your house. That's the actual business, not a/c or furnaces. They bank on you defaulting so can charge you or hold you ransom with liens... And it's perfectly legal under the law
Buyer beware as realtors don't always do their homework.
Always read the WHOLE contract!
Never heard of the company the woman is renting from, but good to see there is a class action lawsuit. My parent rent their water heater and like it that way. Replacements/repairs are done quickly. Renting isn’t terrible, but definitely need to read the fine print.

I was in this position about 5 years ago. It was a nightmare. I bought out the water tank but it was a messy ordeal.
Home Depot. 18months no interest. I was impressed. Trane AC/Furnace and installed the next day.
Renting this equipment is not a bad thing if you don’t want to empty your pocket from your cash. You pay 79$ per month(which is nothing now) instead of paying 7K in cash. It also gives you free maintenance and replacement.
I rented a water heater from Reliance. It was clear terms 84 months 19.00 and end of contract, buy it, don't buy it out, they remove it out or do another rental agreement. Terms were clear. Did not have these issues.
Corruption allowed again by your politicians
Beware RELIANCE HOME COMFORT bought many smaller companies and are doing this with water heaters and furnaces. It's like vulcher towing. Don't ever get into these contracts unless you have more money than brains. :(
This Joanna bird is likely PART of this scam ! Not only stores are ripping off the public but so-called reputable businesses.
Renting a furnace?
Don’t pay take them to court in fraudulent activity what it cost for new furnace and ac $8000
There is no law in this country to protect consumers
They are criminals no shame you think this woman or anyone has a money tree in the back, they know how to deceive people

These are the worst scams going because they're not very well regulated. Govt needs to set fairer rules for the consumer when signing these. The idea of a rental is a good idea for those on a budget but the buyout terms need to be regulated.
Even the best furnace on the market doesn't cost more then 5k... whoever rents a furnace is easily to get scammed for anything 😂😂
Why is she trying to buy it out in the first place?
Maybe she should sue her lawyer for not discovering this during closing?
The creepy companies and those hidden behind the scenes have lien on homes for tankless water heaters etc. are scammers.
Thanks for the information, Reliance is always wanting to sell you a furnace.
Why not finance HVAC rather than rent?
Home builders get kickback to install that equipment
The buyout is not just for the value of the equipment but for the rental agreement as well. Read your contract before signing. In this case the new homeowner was stuck with the contract when she purchased the property. There does need to be better legislation.
It’s not a scam Ya you buy it out Pros and cons Like if it breaks down they fix or replace it 100%
Look into buying out water heaters
Happened to my Father and very common
Went through the same, realtor or the lawyer did not make us aware. Negotiated for a buyout. Scam!
I bought a house got stuck with the previous owners contract for a water heater. The buyout cost was like buying a new tank and a ten year contract.
If it’s Reliance home comfort than they are doing it,
Your lawyer should have known there was a lien when closing the deal.
wouldn't she had known that the furnace was a rental when she bought the place And then wouldn't she have the information on how much the furnace would cost to buy out
Avoid ANY and ALL rent to own or rent furniture or appliances at all cost.

If you have Reliance, you have a lien. You got acammed.
Well...you need to pay attention when you buy your home...
