Ground has been broken

Work has begun on the controversial redevelopment of Northampton Market Square after builders, stakeholders and council members 'broke ground' yesterday, . Construction firm Stepnell has been named as the contractors hired by West Northamptonshire Council to oversee the £8.4m redevelopment of the historic square.

But some traders called the new set-up "a mess" when NorthantsLive visited on opening day. Others said they were worried their regular customers would not follow them to the new site.At a commemorative ground-breaking ceremony held on the square yesterday, Cllr Jonathan Nunn, leader of WNC, and Cllr Dan Lister, cabinet member for economic development, town centre regeneration and growth, were joined by key stakeholders and members of Stepnell Ltd.

Adrian Barnes, regional director at Stepnell Ltd said: "We are excited to be commencing the redevelopment of the Market Square. This is an important project in the transformation and regeneration of the town centre and we are proud to be part of the council's vision for the town”. "We look forward to working closely with Stepnell to see the vision that people have told us they want to see for this space come to life over the next 18 months. In the meantime, I would urge everyone to support our traders at the market’s new temporary location at Commercial St Car Park, before we welcome them back to a revitalised Market Square next year.”
