As a league founder, Hunt paid $25,000 for the right to own the Texans — equivalent to about $253,000 in today’s dollars. The most recent NFL expansion fee was $700 million for the Houston Texans, ironically, in 2002.
Hunt, who died at age 74 in 2006, was also a major figure in American soccer, owning several teams and co-founding. The large family inherited and owned the Chiefs, real estate, and other assets as part of an enormous fortune now estimated at more than $15 billion. He opted to hire Andy Reid as Chiefs coach in 2013, a decision that’s certainly paid off with one Super Bowl win, another possible title this Sunday, and a 117-45 regular-season record.
