A sweet surprise is in store for Jackson Square, the latest shiny hospitality investment in the historic downtown neighborhood.

The neighborhood is familiar for its historic brick facades that have stood since the age of the Great San Francisco earthquake, including the 1907-constructed brick and timber structure that's housed Quince since 2009. The Tusks relocated the restaurant to its current address at 470 Pacific Ave. in 2009 after six years in a small Victorian townhouse in Lower Pacific Heights.

This year Quince turns 20 years old. Chef Michael Tusk has maintained the kitchen's three-star status since 2017 and was named"Best Chef" in the Pacific by the James Beard Foundation in 2007. The Tusks earned a recognizing their restaurants' longtime sourcing from one of the region's oldest certified organic farms, the local 25-acre Fresh Run Farm in Bolinas.As a spokesperson described to, the changes will make the dining room"lighter and brighter" and space tables further apart, reducing the total seat count but providing a more intimate experience. They will also replace the storefront with a"series" of floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening onto Pacific Avenue.

When Quince reopens this summer it will also add an a la carte menu — currently it just serves a $360 eight- to 10-course tasting menu — as well as lunch service.opened in 2019 nearby at 528 Washington St., has served as a private event space only since normal operations halted during the pandemic.
