As a rugby player at school, Thabiso Mokebe couldn't find a gym in his community where he could do training, so he and a friend simply started their own. | LameezOmarjee

The community gym, Fitness Plus Health Club, had its early beginnings in a shack and it's the only gym in Clarens.

"We did not start here… we started at a shack. No lights, no electricity, nothing. That is where it started," he shared. Mokebe said that he and his friend slowly equipped the gym with second-hand weights, which they had bought over the years. Following a needs assessment of the community, it was found that health was one of the issues that needed to be addressed. The only other means people can stay fit is through a weekly Park Run, which happens on Saturdays, while there is also an open field in the middle of the community where youth can play soccer.

Kruisvallei Hydro donated gym equipment to Fitness Plus as part of its social impact responsibilities.Mokebe said that since becoming fully equipped, many more people – both young and old – have been coming to the gym.
