ESKOM LIVE | Breather from Stage 6 load shedding over the weekend

Eskom has warned that an expected cold front this weekend will add strain to the grid, especially at evening peak hours from 17:00 until 21:00.

The loss of capacity at the three Kusile units and the Koeberg unit together removed 3 080MW - equivalent to three stages of load shedding – from the grid. Eskom said breakdowns are currently at 17 093MW of generating capacity, while the generating capacity out of service for planned maintenance is 6 392MW.

Breakdowns have increased to 18 617MW of generating capacity while the generating capacity out of service for planned maintenance is 5 807MW. It will continue until 05:00 on Thursday, when Stage 5 will kick in until 16:00 on Thursday. The pattern will be repeated daily until further notice. Stage 4 load shedding will be implemented from 16:00 on Wednesday until 05:00 on Friday, Eskom said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.

In the past 24 hours, hours two generation units were returned to service at Lethabo and Medupi power stations, but a generating unit each at Hendrina, Matimba and two units at Matla power stations were taken offline for repairs. This will continue until 16:00 on Thursday, when previously communicated load shedding schedules will resume, it said. For the first time in more than two weeks, South Africa will be hit by Stage 4 load shedding, which is currently planned for Thursday evening.

Over the past 24 hours, a generation unit was returned to service at Duvha Power Station. In the same period, a generating unit each at Lethabo, Kendal and Kriel power stations was taken offline for repairs. The delays in returning a unit to service at Hendrina, Medupi and two units at Tutuka power stations have contributed to the capacity constraints, Eskom said in a statement.
