Mathebe Molise chats to City Press about what led her to leave a corporate job as an investment banker to disrupt the beauty industry through her business model, Beauty on TApp

According to businessperson Mathebe Molise, studies have shown that black women spend more on beauty products than any other demographic group, but they are often under-served and under-represented by mainstream beauty brands.

It was more around a need that I had. We needed a make-up artist in Cape Town for a friend’s wedding and we didn’t know where to start. I thought it would be cool to launch an app that lets you search beauty services in an area of your choice. We also had beauty products on the app, and app users asked that we launch a platform where they could shop all their favourite products. This is how the e-commerce site was born and, since then, it has grown and has a larger focus on skincare.

How did you get other beauty brands to list on your website? And how did you get them to trust your e-commerce? Our community kept asking if they could use serums on their body for specific concerns they had, and asked if there were essential body serums available. We looked in the market and couldn’t really find anything, so we decided to launch our own brand, a body care range with active ingredients, and now we’ve included face care. Pastry used to be exclusive to Beauty on TApp but it has now expanded and can be found at other retail stores.
