Scunthorpe waste scandal: Company and director pay the price for ignoring rules 🚫

The Environment Agency has achieved a successful prosecution against SBR Group Developments Limited, a Scunthorpe-based company, and its director for operating an illegal waste facility.SBR Group Developments Limited, located on Winterton Road, Scunthorpe, confessed to running a waste facility that violated environmental permits.

According to court records, Berry had acquired the Winterton Road site in late 2017/18 from Thompsons Waste Management Limited, a company that had been previously prosecuted for exceeding its environmental permit's waste limit before going into liquidation. Despite Berry's attempts to address the inherited waste issue by contacting the Environment Agency in August 2018, he was informed that an environmental permit or registered exemption was required for waste activities on the site.Although Berry claimed that most of the waste had been removed to a landfill during a formal interview in January 2020, a visit in June 2021 revealed large piles of shredded waste. Finally, in November 2021, the site was cleared.

The operator's avoidance of £19,189.50 in permitting charges was estimated, and a total of 726.31 tonnes of waste were found on the site.
