ESKOM UPDATES | Stage 4 load shedding to be implemented until Monday morning

Power utility Eskom said on Sunday that Stage 4 loadshedding will be implemented from 14:00 today until 05:00 on Monday.

In the same period, a generating unit each at Duvha, Grootvlei, Kriel and Matla power stations was taken offline for repairs. The delay in returning to service a generating unit at Kendal and two generating units at Tutuka power stations is contributing to the current capacity constraints. Power utility Eskom said on Sunday that Stage 4 loadshedding will be implemented from 14:00 today until 05:00 on Monday.

Over the past 24 hours, a generating unit each at Arnot, Duvha and two generating units at Matla power stations were returned to service. But at the same time, a generating unit each at Grootvlei, Kendal, Kriel and two generating units at Camden power stations were taken offline for repairs. After that, South Africans will see Stage 1 load shedding from 05:00 until 16:00, followed by Stage 3 load shedding from 16:00 until 05:00 on Wednesday."Breakdowns have reduced to 15 747MW of generating capacity while the generating capacity out of service for planned maintenance is 1 946MW. Since Friday, a generating unit each at Kriel, Lethabo, Majuba, Matla and two generating units at Arnot power stations were returned to service.

"Eskom is obliged to carry generation reserves to cater for unforeseen events. These reserves were used on Monday and Tuesday to buffer the effects of the cold weather. Unfortunately, due to the failure of additional generation units since Sunday, the reserves have been depleted and can no longer buffer the lingering effects of the cold weather and make up for the lost generation capacity.

Breakdowns have increased to 16 313MW of generating capacity while the generating capacity out of service for planned maintenance is reduced to 3 478MW. Eskom appealed to the public to reduce demand and to use electricity sparingly and efficiently, including switching off geysers and pool pumps from 17:00 to 21:00, as this lowers demand and helps in alleviating the pressure on the power system and contributes to lower stages of load shedding.Eskom announced on Monday that Stage 4 load shedding would be implemented, partly due to 'high demand'.

"Due to some recovery in the generation capacity, load shedding will be suspended from 12:00 until 16:00 [on Saturday]," it said in a brief statement. Stage 1 load shedding will remain in place until 16:00 on Thursday, followed by Stage 3 until midnight. Power cuts will then be suspended until 05:00 on Friday, after which the pattern will be repeated on Friday and Saturday.

Stage 3 load shedding will then be implemented again over the evening peak from 16:00 until midnight. This pattern will be repeated until further notice, Eskom said.
