“It’s really a long-term investment strategy,” she says. “To ensure success, [energy companies] need to invest in new technology and infrastructure and business models that maybe aren't necessarily in place right now.” In effect, we can expect enormous changes across the entire industry, from extraction to production to delivery. “Companies are going to need to look at their supply chains,” DeMicoli says. “[If they remain reliant] on outdated energy sources, they are not going to be as nimble as they need.”

Many are turning to contingent talent—that is, contracted and other non-full-time employees. Compared to full-timers, contingent workers are more flexible and affordable in the long term. They also fill persistent skills gaps that can plague workforces.
