It's one of the busiest days of the week at Bury Market with people coming from far and wide to visit the town's 'jewel in the crown'. But this morning , customers were confused when they arrived to find the shutters of the market hall were still closed.
The market is still open for business, Bury council has insisted, with the majority of stalls unaffected while some stallholders who are based inside the building have already been relocated. But many of the businesses across the market are uncertain about the future. Surveyors were in the building again today, assessing what needs to be done and are expected to report back by next week. Bury council says the length of closure is still not confirmed, but traders have been told the hall won't be open until at least Christmas.
Karon Osbiston works at Rachel's Bags inside the market hall. She believes the 23-year-old business will not survive the move. Emma said: "I'm absolutely panicking out my head. How am I going to pay my bills? I'm a single mum with three kids." Kayleigh added: "How are we going to sustain clients? This is the busiest time of the year."
