Concerns over defect-ridden buildings have prompted the NSW Building Commission to expand its presence beyond Sydney, starting with a permanent office in the Illawarra.

In response to serious defects in several major building projects, the NSW Building Commission has announced it is establishing a permanent presence in the Illawarra. The government says it will see how the regional pilot works before rolling out permanent teams in other regional areas.

Assistant Building Commissioner Matt Press said it was important the Illawarra was selected as the first regional office."Projects on Young Street and Crownview, they have really put a stain on industry and really hurt its pride." "It can be a game of Whac-A-Mole – and that is why we are making sure as a regulator we are not just Sydney based."

Minister for Building Anoulack Chanthivong said the decision on where to locate the next regional compliance team will depend on outcomes achieved by the Illawarra.Earlier this year Commissioner Chandler said he wanted a team in the Hunter, Mid North Coast, and Northern Rivers.
