Targeting a launch in fiscal year 2028, the new ship will be modeled after the Disney Wish, the largest of Disney’s cruise liners.

Oriental Land, the operator of Tokyo Disney Resort, says it signed a licensing agreement with Disney Enterprises, intending to invest about 330 billion yen to launch the first Disney Cruise in Japan. Targeting a launch in fiscal year 2028, the new ship will be modelled after the Disney Wish, the largest of Disney’s cruise liners, where immersive shows feature characters from Mickey and Minnie to Frozen’s Elsa.

Japan has been experiencing a foreign tourist boom fuelled by the weak yen. Oriental Land said today that the cruise will target families as well as foreign tourists. Roughly 1 250 rooms will be able to accommodate about 4 000 passengers. “This decision was based on the potential growth of the cruise market in Japan, the experience the company has gained in its theme park and hotel operations, and its strong relationship with the Disney Company,” Oriental Land said in a statement.
