The project flagged for near the Queensland town of Hughenden envisages one of the biggest wind farms in the country being built in the state's north-west.

The proposal would see a 5-gigawatt wind farm — one of the biggest in the country — which could produce enough energy to power a population the size of Townsville.Construction is at least two years away, but support from all levels of government has led to confidence in the proposed project.see a huge wind farm built in outback Queensland, with the capacity to power at least 200,000 homes.

Stage one of the project, called Bogunda Wind Farm, would see a 2-gigawatt wind farm constructed, which would constitute about one-third of the total proposal. Nearby, the Kennedy Energy Park, which was completed in 2019, is designed to power 35,000 homes — less than a fifth of the proposed Bogunda Wind Farm.

"The water, the sewerage, the impacts on our hospitals, with the benefit there's also a lot of pressure that comes with housing the people that are coming our way," she said.
