Katleho Olifant died last Sunday while a mass funeral was being held for his five friends, who also died after allegedly consuming contaminated snacks from a local spaza shop.
Gauteng Social Development MEC Faith Mazibuko says that social workers had been deployed to provide support to the affected families. Mazibuko noted, “Unfortunately, because the community looted the spaza shops, obtaining real evidence is now difficult. The authorities are relying on the toxicology report to determine what type of poison was consumed.”A local resident urged health education to raise awareness in the community, “The only way that these spaza shops will close down is by stopping to buy.
