Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is taking steps to combat the rising threat of sextortion.

CINCINNATI - Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is taking steps to combat the rising threat of sextortion, a crime where individuals are coerced into sending intimate photos that are later used for blackmail.

Ravi Sinha, Meta's head of child safety policy, emphasized the importance of education in preventing sextortion. "We're alerting teens when they're chatting with someone from a different country. One of the things that sextortion scammers commonly do is they pretend to be a classmate or somebody from the next town or next school over. And so, we're letting teens know in the chat that they're actually talking to somebody from another country," Sinha said.
